England’s Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston was left laughing at the sight of Phil Mickelson running to hit his ball during the controversial incident on Saturday.
WATCH: Mickelson putts moving ball
Johnston, playing alongside Mickelson, was left with not much to say after watching the veteran American dash across the green to hit his moving ball in order to prevent it from rolling off the putting surface.
‘I was watching the ball go past. You saw, he ran and hit it… I looked at him and said, “Is this actually happening?”‘Johnston said.
‘But honestly, I looked at him and I said to him, “Sorry, I can’t help but laugh at that. That’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.” I’ve never seen anything like it.’
Mickelson insisted he was playing by the rules and happy to hit the moving ball and incur the penalty rather than being forced to play it from behind the bunker where he’d have no shot.
Beef shot 81 with Mickelson one better.
