Overnight leader Matt Jones stood firm with a final-round 68 to seal a comfortable five-stroke victory at the Honda Classic this past Sunday.
It was the 40-year-old Australian’s second win on the PGA Tour after a decent display from round one to four.
Scores of 61, 70, 69 and 68 were enough for Jones to wrap up victory on 12 under par, with American Brandon Hagy his nearest competitor on seven under.
‘I mean, golf … it’s a very tough sport we play out here,’ Jones said after his triumph at PGA National Resort.
‘It’s very cutthroat. We’re working to keep our jobs every year. And you have to perform well to be able to do that. It’s been seven years since I won, and there have been some lean years in there. I couldn’t put anything on it. I probably had a goal this week to walk a little slower, and just relax. I’m normally an up-pace, up-tempo person. I play golf quickly. So I tried to stay calm and stay relaxed out there. You have to be when you play this golf course. I set that as a goal this week, and it worked out.’
Charl Schwartzel (+3) signed off in T53, while Erik van Rooyen settled for a share of 60th position on five over.
