Thomas Aiken has battled in his rookie year on the PGA Tour, but this week at the Wyndham Championship he’s been on song and hit the weekend tied for 11th place on six under par.
‘It’s a great golf course, a nice old-style course where you have to hit greens to have a chance. It is out there, because the greens are pure. Good putts will go in,’ he said.
‘I holed some nice ones today and had a pretty good feel for the pace. You’ve got to keep the ball below the hole here to have a chance. They had a few sneaky pins, which made life a bit difficult, but luckily I hit it well enough to get a good score in there,’ he added.
The three-time European Tour winner earned his American card through the Web.com Tour’s Finals Series. This season he’s played 22 events, missed 11 cuts, and has two top-25s.
He ranks 173rd in the FedEx Cup standings on 224 points and needs to be within the top 125 to make the Playoffs. At present 125th place is held by Kim Whee on 444 points.
Aiken shot 33 on the stretch at Sedgefield Country Club on Friday before signing for 66 to move 30 places up the leaderboard and into a share of 11th place.
He has a golden opportunity to make up ground in the standings this week.
‘I’ve been doing this a long time and every week I feel that I can go out there and win. That’s pretty much what I need to do this week. It’s been very different for me, having spent 12 years in Europe. It’s almost like starting again. I’ve learnt a lot out here and I’m really looking forward to next year. I love it out here,’ he said.
