World number seven Adam Scott announced on Tuesday that he will not compete in the Rio Olympics, opting rather to focus on the majors.
‘I have informed the Australian team captain and relevant authorities, who are understanding of my position,’ Scott said. ‘I wish the Australian Olympic team the very best of luck in Rio.’
The 35-year-old Australian has already won twice on the PGA tour this year, but was outspoken about his lack of interest in Olympic golf.
For top players like Scott the schedule is already jam-packed without a week in Brazil, with the US Open beginning in mid June and The Open Championship five weeks later. The PGA Championship is a fortnight later, so there is limited time between majors.
‘My decision has been taken as a result of an extremely busy playing schedule around the time of the Olympics and other commitments, both personal and professional,’ said Scott.
