Justin Walters will be pleased with his first taste of US Open golf after finishing his first round at Pebble Beach with a 1-over par 72, writes JOHN GOLIATH.

Walters was like many of his countrymen who made a shaky start to his round. He opened with a bogey at the par-4 1st, before another bogey at No 9. Those early wobbles were followed up by a string of pars before work back towards levelling matters could take place.

Walters, though, looked a bit more relaxed on the back nine and made a birdie on the 10th hole following a beautiful drive.
He made another bogey on 15th, but a four at the par-5 18th saw him complete a respectable first round at the third Major of the year.
His compatriot Merrick Bremner, however, didn’t enjoy his first taste of the US Open, after he finished the first round with an 8-over par 79.
Bremner made a spectacular bogey at the 10th when he holed his bunker shot. He made another bogey at 12, before another drop shot at No 17 was sandwiched in between birdies at the 15th and 18th respectively.
However, the wheels came off during his second nine.
Bremner made an eight at the par-4 second, before he suffered a double bogey at the par-3 5th hole. He made another bogey at No 8 to come home in 42.
