Justin Rose will start the second round at 5:24pm SA time as the sole leader of the US Open after a superb 65 put him on top of the leaderboard.
The Englishman, dethroned by Brooks Koepka as the world No 1, will continue alongside Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods as he looks to maintain his ascendancy over the pair.
He matched the lowest opening round at Pebble Beach Golf Links in US Open Championship history to take a narrow lead after day one on the California coast.
‘I wouldn’t say it’s exhilarating, because I feel like my mindset is I am in a 72-hole tournament,’ he said.
‘This is just a very small step towards the outcome. So you don’t feel that buzz that you would on a Sunday, but you can’t help but look around over your shoulder, and damn, this is Pebble Beach.
‘You shot 65 and you’re in the US Open. It’s a cool moment. Whatever transpires the rest of the week, it was a cool moment.
‘I was trying to stay patient with myself mentally, but kept up-and-downing the ball, kept the momentum up, and then got rewarded with a hot finish – birdieing the last three took a good round to a great round.’
It’s going to be a late night for SA golf fans, with Louis Oosthuizen, one back of Rose, only getting his second loop around Pebble Beach under way at 11:20pm with Jhonattan Vegas and Patrick Reed for company.
