Louis Oosthuizen is chasing a rare double achieved by only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods – a win at Pebble Beach to back up a St Andrews triumph, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
As one of eight players who have finished runner-up in all four Major championships, the No 1 South African is trending nicely as he bids to join the elite company in a far better historical group.
Oosthuizen is in the top 25 in three major statistical categories through 36 holes: strokes gained (SG) off the tee, SG approach and SG putting after his roller-coaster second round included seven birdies, six bogeys and just five pars.
‘Yeah, I had a lot of loose iron shots today,’ he said.
‘To shoot one-under par the way I felt on a few shots I take a lot out of that round, a lot of good things.’
He knows that he must eliminate the mistakes on Saturday.
‘Seven birdies and six bogeys. I’m not a big fan of bogeys, I had a lot of bogeys on my scorecard. But you miss these greens, it’s so difficult around the greens at the rough. And you can’t control the ball. You basically are guessing what it’s going to do. And all those loose iron shots, I had tough chips, and ended up bogeying probably all of them.
‘Yeah, for poa annua greens, I’ve never had really a good track record on poa annua. But I’ve been really solid this week on them and felt that I could see the lines pretty decent. I’m looking forward to the weekend.’
