Phil Mickelson boasts a strong record at Pebble Beach, something that will stand him in good stead when he attempts to complete career Grand Slam.
Mickelson bagged his fifth Pro-Am victory in February at the celebrated layout but the 48-year-old will start Thursday’s US Open with something far greater on his mind.
He knows that time is now not on his side as he looks to join the elite band of players with the honour of having won all of golf’s Major crowns.
‘The difficulty is that when you’re in your 20s you feel like you have multiple chances. And when you’re turning 49, you’re like, “I’ve got two more chances – this year and maybe Winged Foot (in 2020) and that’s about it”. With that being the only one in the four that I haven’t won, and what it would offer me and how I look at my career, I put more pressure on it,’ Mickelson said.
Gene Sarezen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and South Africa’s Gary Player are the only players to have won all four Majors.
The US Open is played from 13-16 June at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
