Haydn Porteous’ early round 68 was a shining light for South African golfers at Royal Troon on Saturday in the third round of The Open, as the other more senior players struggled in windy conditions.
The 22-year-old’s round was one of the rounds of the day alongside Steve Stricker and Brandt Snedeker. He collected seven birdies in his round and will go into the final in a share of 25th place, a strong showing on his major debut.
Charl Schwartzel struggled to a two-over-par 73 that included two bogeys and two double-bogeys to end the day in a tie for ninth, still the top South African in the field.
Richard Sterne is tied for 50th place after collecting seven bogeys on his way to a round of 76 to be at five-over-par for the tournament. Zander Lombard carded a third-round 74 to be at six-over-par for the tournament and in a tie for 62nd place.
World number 10 Branden Grace had a day to forget as he struggled to a five-over-par 76 and now sits at seven-over-par for the tournament in a tie for 65th position.
