• Poulter gets the job done

Poulter came second in 2008 at Royal Birkdale

Ian Poulter ended his streak of missing the last five Majors, after qualifying for The Open Championship at his home course on Tuesday.

Poulter shot rounds of 70-68 at Woburn Golf Club to finish T2 behind Shiv Kapur of India.

‘Job done today,’ Poulter tweeted afterwards.

Kapur shot a second round 65 to return to The Open for the first time since 2013, while Sunshine Tour member Toby Tree joined Poulter in punching his ticket to Royal Birkdale.

Now, Poulter will return to the site of his best Major finish after he was edged into second place by Padraig Harrington in 2008. He holed a 15-foot par putt on the final hole that he thought might be enough to get into a playoff, until Harrington pulled away with a strong finish marked by a 5-wood to 4 feet for eagle on the 17th hole.

The 2017 field is now at 145 players, leaving 11 spots being offered to top finishers in the next two PGA TOUR (Greenbrier Classic, John Deere Classic) and European Tour (Irish Open, Scottish Open) events.

The Open begins on 20 July.
