World number one Dustin Johnson hopes this week’s Open Championship will be the tournament where he claims his second Major title.
The American won the 2016 US Open but despite enjoying eight more victories at tournaments since then, he is still waiting for his second success at one of golf’s Majors.
Johnson finished in the top 10 at the Open in 2016 and the 2018 Masters, while he was third in the US Open last month. But the 34-year-old has his eyes firmly on lifting the Claret Jug at Carnoustie this week.
‘I would always like to win more, but I have played very well over the last few years. I’ve given myself a lot of chances,’ he said.
‘But as we all know, it’s very hard to win in a major. You’ve got to play four really good rounds, and everything in your game has to be working. Just a month ago at the US Open, I played well enough to win. I didn’t putt well enough on the weekend to win.
‘You know, I didn’t feel like I was hitting bad putts, but I just wasn’t making anything. That’s golf.’
Johnson is one of a large American contingent looking to replace compatriot Jordan Spieth as Open champion.
