South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel was pleased with his showing at the 81st Masters despite being unable to catch the leaders down the final stretch.
Highlights: Schwartzel makes a run at the green jacket
A back nine flurry that saw Schwartzel move swiftly up the leaderboard after he opened with a front nine 35 on Sunday.
He birdied the difficult 11th and then the par 5 13th, but crucially dropped a shot on 14 after a wayward approach left him no chance of scrambling for par.
‘I mean, it’s a great week,’ said the 32-year-old South African.
‘I really thought towards the end there, especially standing on the 14th fairway, if I could make another few birdies I would have had a really good chance, but Sergio and Justin, they’re really playing well now and the first two days was very difficult and on the weekend it was very good weather and I played really well.’
Schwartzel was unable to emulate his closing streak of 2011 when he closed with four consecutive birdies to claim the green jacket. But those thoughts were on his mind.
‘Man, I was thinking, obviously, bringing all those memories back and trying to make that happen again. But it’s hard to come back from way behind. And I played well and Sergio and Justin, they are going very well coming in.’
