The former Proteas cricket star tells us who his favourite player is, his bucket-list courses and what he thinks of the LIV Golf Series.
How long have you been playing golf?
I started back in 2001. You wouldn’t have found me near a course before that until a certain Mr Tiger Woods announced himself to the world.
What is your current handicap?
0.5.
What are your favourite golf courses in and around Cape Town?
King David Mowbray, Pearl Valley, Steenberg Golf Club and Rondebosch Golf Club.
Favourite club in your bag?
8-iron.
Your best or funniest memory from a round of golf?
The first time I shanked one! I couldn’t believe I was capable of doing that.
Of the overseas courses that you have played, which stand out?
Wentworth Golf Club in England, The Vines Resort in Perth, Australia, and a few others too.
Any similarities you’ve found between cricket and golf?
Similarities … Well your head has to be still when making contact with the ball. Timing the ball in cricket and your tempo in golf have the same dynamics. If your hands are good enough you’re able to hit any shot in golf and cricket. Avoiding a three-putt in golf is the same as defending your wicket at all times.
Any bucket-list golf courses you still want to play?
Augusta National in Georgia, the Old Course St Andrews definitely and TPC Sawgrass.
What ultimate fourball would you like to be part of?
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.
Do you watch any golf on TV?
Yeah, I watch the PGA Tour mostly and occasionally the European Tour [DP World Tour]. A bit of the Sunshine Tour in between as well. I can’t be bothered with the new LIV Golf Series.
Who are your favourite players?
There can be only one … Mr Tiger Woods.
