Celine Boutier’s marathon LPGA Match Play campaign ended in disappointment on Sunday with the Frenchwoman losing on the first extra hole of her quarter-final against Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom in Las Vegas.
A weary Boutier played an astonishing 45 holes in a single day on Saturday after a record-breaking 28-hole last-16 victory over Ashleigh Buhai at the Shadow Creek Golf Course – the longest match in tournament history.
After a brief 30-minute turnaround following that epic win, the 31-year-old 11th seed was back on the course for her quarter-final against Sagstrom.
That match was halted in near darkness late Saturday with the players all-square after 17 holes, meaning Boutier and Sagstrom were required to return to the course early on Sunday to complete their last-eight duel.
After sharing the 18th hole, Sagstrom clinched victory with a birdie on the first sudden-death hole to advance to a semi-final meeting with Angel Yin.
“Obviously we would have liked to finish yesterday, but we fought hard,” Sagstrom said after her win. “I was tired yesterday and I was tired this morning, still all right. Happy to get it done,” the Swede added.
