In the latest of Oosthuizen’s travels around South Africa, he reveals his No 6 favourite course in the country and the reasons why.
I just love the whole setting at Fancourt. I mean, what is there not to like? There is a great variety of golf courses, which are always in superb condition and you can really test your game off the tees on the Montagu course.
Rating courses is always an enviable task and yet this course always makes my top 10 – and believe me, there is some real competition given the quality of some of the golf courses that we play on.
I like a course that is challenging in terms of stroke selection and makes you think when playing your shots. Apart from some breathtaking scenery – and it’s in a region where I grew up and learned to play the game, so it’s close to home and my heart – the holes are long enough that you have to bring your A game if you want to shoot a good score.
There are three quality courses at Fancourt, and while The Links is regarded by many people as the No 1 course in the country, Montagu, for me, represents a really pleasant and world-class facility.
The 17th is a nice par three, one you take the water out of play, and the 18th is a testing 484m par 5 – not the longest hole on the course – with water in front of the green, but it’s a great ‘fish and reward’ hole!
The Oosthuizen top 10 so far:
1 Albertinia GC
2 Durban CC
3 Gary Player CC
4 Leopard Creek CC
5 East London GC
6 Fancourt (Montagu)
