South Africa’s David Frost opened with a three-under-par 68 at the Senior PGA Championship on Thursday. The 1999 SA Open champion began on the tenth with a birdie before dropping his first shot at the 12th. The rest of his first nine was uneventful as he turned at even-par.
His second nine, starting at the first, provided a lot more action. The 56-year-old birdied the second, third, and fifth to climb to three-under-par before a bogey at the seventh curbed his charge. The Paarl-born golfer did respond in the best way by birdieing the eighth before ending with a par at the ninth to sign for his 68.
2008 US Open runner-up Rocco Mediate shot the round of the day, a nine-under-par 62 that included seven birdies and an eagle, to take a one-shot lead.
‘It’s just great to be playing good. We got three more days and who knows what’s going to happen. On this golf course anything can happen. But so far so good. We’ll just try to drive it good and play from there’ Mediate said.
Pre-tournament favourites Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, and John Daly had differing fortunes. Mongomerie carded 67, while Langer opened with a two-under-par 69. ‘Wild Thing’ Daly struggled to a four-over-par 75.
