Denmark’s Thomas Bjørn catapulted himself from tied sixth and four behind the lead to four clear of the field on day two of the MCB Tour Championship.
His score included seven birdies and two eagles with no drop shots, giving him an 11-under-par 61, beating Jarmo Sadelin’s course record of 62 in 2019.
“It was solid, I hit 17 greens in regulation and gave myself a lot of chances, so happy with how it turned out,” Bjørn said after the round.
In the pre-tournament press conference, Bjørn said he had no expectations as he could not recall the last tournament he had played and had only managed to practice a few times leading up to the tournament. Clearly, the rust is off, and the big Dane has found his rhythm.
Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin and day one’s leader Jarmo Sandelin are both on 11 under par, four adrift of Bjørn’s 15 under par total.
If it weren’t for Bjørn’s scintillating round, South Africa’s James Kingston’s seven-under-par 65 would have been the low round of the day.
After a tough start to the tournament, Kingston needed a low round to help him consolidate his lead in the Order of Merit and he did just that with a blemish-free seven-under-par 65.
With an overall score of seven under par and Adilson da Silva, his closest rival, at nine under par Kingston needs to put one more good round together to take home the John Jacobs Trophy.
