Compleat Golfer recently got to test out the latest Garmin Approach G8 and Approach S6 GPS devices.
With the increasing popularity of laser rangefinders, handheld or watch GPS devices have had to step up their game and the latest Garmin Approach products have done this in a considerable way.
Beginning with the Approach G8 device, you would have thought that such products would have become obsolete thanks to the multitude of GPS apps you can download for smartphones, however, this device is packed with so many features and the ability to give you accurate distances for over 30 000 courses worldwide without having to use up valuable data that it makes it worth every penny.
The Approach G8 features a large colour touchscreen with a new technology called PlaysLike Distance, which gives you more accurate distances to the target taking into account the elevation changes on the course. You can also touch anywhere on the screen and the distance will be calculated to that spot. Distances are measured to the front, centre and back of the green and the device will recommend which club to take if you have inputted your specific distances you hit each club in your bag. The device even offers a close-up view of each green on the course helping you to zone in even more on the pin.
The Approach G8 acts as your personal assistant on the course by linking over wifi to your smartphone and showing you emails, messages and alerts on the screen, which means you never have to take your phone out of your golf bag while on the course.
The Garmin Approach G8 has taken handheld golf GPS devices to a new level and is worth the R8 000 price tag when you take into account all of its features.
