Bryanston Country Club was named the top club in the 2017 John Collier Good Governance and Environmental Compliance Survey.
The survey received a 39% response rate from golf clubs throughout South Africa and a 27% national compliance level, but it was Bryanston to be named number one, despite a number of strong contenders.
‘The reviewers were really impressed with the work that is being done at Bryanston and it is fitting that on World Environment Day the club should be appropriately recognised,’ read a statement from the organisers of the report.
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June each year and is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action.
Special mention was made of reports made by Prince’s Grant Golf Estate and last year’s winner, Umhlali Country Club. Umhlali’s ongoing commitment towards sustainable improvement, and Prince’s Grant impressive reporting of data by their green keeping team were praised.
‘What ultimately swung the award the way of Bryanston, was their club’s ‘overall balanced approach to sustainability through a programmatical approach to good governance, and environmental compliance as being part of the foundation that underpins the Bryanston Country Club’s licence to operate’.
‘The review team were further impressed by the work done by the club’s governing body, its environmental committee, the management team and in particular the club GM, Paul Lishman, and course superintendent Ronnie Cousins on a range of issues, including turf and water management, biodiversity planning and monitoring.’
