Shaun Norris made two bogeys in the middle of his first round at the True Thailand Classic on Thursday, yet went on to score 67 for a share of fifth place.
‘I have a lot of confidence in my game and hopefully it carries on. I really enjoy this course and the scoring is good. The conditions are great and being a bigger hitter helps around such a long track,’ he said.
The two-time Asian Tour winner played his new TaylorMade PSi irons for the first time in tournament conditions and made seven birdies at Black Mountain Golf Club.
‘I’ve been hitting the ball well lately, changed to a new set of irons and I’m happy with them and the day’s outcome. I’ve had them for about six or seven days, pretty much straight into the bag and they’re working well. My previous set lasted about two years, so I moved to the new PSI set and I’m very pleased,’ he said.
At five-under-par he was three shots behind first-round leader Peter Uihlein, who carded 64 for the outright lead, chased by Pelle Edberg in second place.
2013 Nelson Mandela Championship winner Scott Jamieson shared third with Spain’s Javier Colomo on six-under-par, one shot ahead of Norris and eight others tied for fifth.
