Compleat Golfer’s latest cover star Charl Schwarzel is renowned as one of the best ball strikers in the world and his precision has yielded top-10s in his last six starts at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
The 2011 Masters champ resolved his putting problems with a superb victory at the Tshwane Open earlier this year and began reascending the world ranking. He currently rests at 32nd place, far from his personal best of sixth, which came on the back of a tie for fourth at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in 2012.
Trump National Doral has hosted the tournament since 2007 and the venue has been good to Schwartzel, who was second in 2010, fourth in 2012, 16th in 2013 and ninth in 2014. Last year he underperformed and finished in a tie for 44th, but he’s certainly a horse for the course.
His ability to contend across the globe is evidenced by his 11 European Tour titles and success on the PGA Tour. He most recently shared 45th place at the Norther Trust Open, but needs to step it up a gear this week at TPC Blue Monster, where 48 of the world’s top 50 will play.
There are less than five weeks until The Masters begins and Schwartzel will certainly be looking to transfer his local success (which includes wins at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and Tshwane Open) to the American stage.
This is a week when the 31-year-old is likely to outperform his friends Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace, but it will take a dominant performance from the Vereeniging local.
