Day three of the MCB Tour Championship promised to be a humdinger of a day, with the likes of Colin Montgomerie, Paul Broadhurst, Barry Lane, David Frost and Philip Price all within one shot it was going to be a scrap.
Montgomerie made his intentions clear with three birdies in the first four holes. Two nasty doubles on the back nine, however, saw his defence of the trophy come to an end on 12 under.
Philip Price had a mediocre day out signing for a two under and a total of 11 under par. Also finishing on 11 under was South Africa’s James Kingston, who had a commendable showing on his first visit to the Legend Course. Fellow South African David Frost did not have a good day out with numerous bogeys and a double, eventually staggering to an eight under par finish.
Imminent winner of the John Jacob’s Trophy Paul Broadhurst had an up and down day with five birdies and four bogeys. His eagle on the last, however, left him on a total of 13 under par and almost in a playoff. Lane, his playing partner, started the 18th on 13 under meaning a birdie or better was needed. Leaving himself just off the green for two, a chip and a solid putt secured him his first victory of the MCB Tour Championship. A teary celebration and speech confirmed how much it meant to him with two runner ups and numerous top 10s in the tournament.
And so ends the sixth playing of the MCB Tour Championship hosted by Constance Belle Mare Plage and with it the European Senior Tour season.
