Richard Sterne has a chance to win his seventh European Tour title after carding a bogey-free 65 at The Old Course at St. Andrews.
‘It’s as good as it gets, there’s no better place to be playing golf than here, in conditions like this. I was luckily able to take advantage out there,’ he said.
The South African has made 13 cuts in 17 starts this season, with a best result of tied-fourth at the Tshwane Open in February. He grabbed a chance to improve his Race to Dubai standings this week by reaching Sunday at 13 under par.
‘It’s nice to be up there. I haven’t finished things off this year when I’ve been in the mix, so hopefully on Sunday I can go out there and sink a few putts when it counts,’ he said.
Tyrrell Hatton was out in front on 17 under par after shooting a course record 62 at St. Andrews to garner a three-shot cushion over Ross Fisher.

Sterne was tied for third with Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren, with the pair four strokes off the pace. Germans Martin Kaymer and Florian Fritsch rounded out the top five, each totalling 12 under par after 54 holes.
Louis Oosthuizen, Jaco Ahlers, and George Coetzee were the next-best South Africans on the leaderboard and shared 22 place on six under par.
