The Sunshine Tour will be welcoming The European Tour back to South Africa after the Christmas break with the 2017 BMW South African Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni at Glendower Golf Club from 12-15 January 2017.
The second-oldest national open championship in golf will be the third event on The European Tour’s 2017 schedule, the early part of which was announced on Monday.
There are two other events on that schedule up until April 2017 that are set for South Africa, and, like the BMW SA Open, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and The European Tour. They are the Joburg Open at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club from 23-26 February, and then Tshwane Open at Pretoria Country Club from 2-5 March.
‘It will be good, as it always is, to have The European Tour back in South Africa putting on co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour,’ said Sunshine Tour Executive Director Selwyn Nathan. ‘Our relationship is a long and friendly one, and our tournaments with The European Tour as partners are highlights on our schedule.’
Keith Waters, The European Tour’s Chief Operating Officer, said: ‘The initial sector of the schedule once again reflects the global nature of The European Tour, taking in 10 different countries over the first five months of the season.
‘It also highlights the strong relationships we have in these territories, particularly with the Sunshine Tour, the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour.
‘We hope to have further updates about this initial sector in the near future, including the possibility of an additional tournament in South Africa, before, in keeping with recent tradition, we unveil the schedule in its entirety during the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai in November.’
