On Sunday Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson put on a show in the hunt for gold during the Men’s Olympic Golf Tournament, but Rose won on 16 under par.
Great Britain took gold, silver went to Sweden’s Stenson on 14 under par, and bronze to America’s Matt Kuchar on 13 under par after 72 holes of stroke play.
‘It feels absolutely incredible,’ Rose said. ‘The whole week I’ve been so focused, really, to be honest with you. I’ve been so into it. I’ve been so up for it.
‘I’ve been just so determined, I suppose, to represent Team GB as best as I could, and it was just the most magical week, it really was.’
South Africa’s Jaco van Zyl finished in a share of 43rd on two over par, while Brandon Stone was tied for 55th on nine over par.
Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 after an absence of 112 years. The excitement of the final round vindicated the addition of the sport.
Rose made a hole in one during the first round and Van Zyl repeated the feat on Saturday. 36 of the 60 player broke par for the tournament, and the highlights reel was full of birdies and eagles.
Talk will come regarding the format, but golf made its return to the Olympic Games with seamless ease.
