George Coetzee is in New Jersey to take his fifth crack at the PGA Championship, which begins at Baltusrol Golf Club on Thursday. He excelled at the major last year and finished tied-seventh.
The 30-year-old had missed his three previous cuts at the season’s final major, but shot a second-round 65 along with a final-round 67 at Whistling Straits in 2015 to finish alongside Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.
The stocky South African has endured a mixture of fortunes this season and will be looking get back on track at Baltusrol. He recorded three top-15s on the European Tour earlier this season and won the Sunshine Tour’s Dimension Data Pro-Am. The Pretoria resident has struggled lately, however, and missed the cut in his last five European starts.
Coetzee recently shared 21st place at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which marked his third top-35 result in the United States this year. He’ll be keen to take his chance at the final major of 2016.
