Paul Broadhurst carded a final-round 68 at Carnoustie on Sunday to win the Senior Open Championship by two shots.
‘It’s massive, absolutely massive. I’m not aware of how big it is yet honestly. I’m trying not to think about it. Beyond my wildest dreams to be honest. This sort of thing doesn’t happen to players like me normally,’ said the joyful new champion.
‘I’ve won a few tournaments over the years, but nothing anywhere near as big as this event. I feel very, very privileged to have won this event’ he added.
Broadhurst began the day four shots behind overnight leader Miguel Angel Jimenez and went about his business on the front nine, collecting eight pars and a single birdie at the par-five sixth.
His homeward stretch was even better as he rolled in birdies at the 10th, 13th, and 15th. He kept a clean sheet on the homeward loop for a championship-winning score of 11-under-par.
The top South African in the field was David Frost, who finished in a tie for 14th at two-under-par. James Kingston shared 54th and Ghana’s Emos Korblah ended up tied-66th.
