Five of the 11 South Africans who started the 150th Open at St Andrews made the weekend cut.
Thriston Lawrence followed his first-round 69 with a second-round 71 that included five birdies and four bogeys. He sits on four under, nine shots behind the leader, Australia’s Cameron Smith.

Dylan Frittelli and Garrick Higgo are tied for 36th at three under par after carding 71 and 69 in the second round, respectively. The latter fired four consecutive birdies at the Old Course, and five overall, before bogeys on the 16th and 17th.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Dean Burmester made the even-par cut and are tied for 66th. Burmester sank a birdie on the final hole.
Two-time Open winner Ernie Els, 2010 Open winner at St Andrews Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Harding and Zander Lombard all finished on one over par to miss the cut by one stroke.
Shaun Norris (three over) and amateur Aldrich Potgieter (six over) also failed to make the cut.
Erik van Rooyen withdrew from the tournament before the first round due to a neck injury.
