David Frost made one bogey at Carnoustie Golf Links on Thursday and shot 71 for a share of 14th place early into the first round of the Senior Open Championship.
The 10-time PGA Tour winner made one birdie on either side of the turn in Scotland, but dropped a shot at the 18th to lie two shots behind clubhouse leaders Tom Byrum, Scott McCarron, and Carlos Franco.
Frost ranks fourth on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit this season and recently finished tied-seventh at the Senior PGA Championship.
He played Carnoustie under tournament conditions at the 128th Open Championship in 1999n and finished the week tied for seventh place on 10-over-par, four shots behind winner Paul Lawrie.
His fond memories of the course proved valuable on Thursday as he went around without a blemish…until the 18th. A drop at the last would see him into the clubhouse on one-under-par.
Gary Player once claimed that his senior major wins were the toughest to come by. Frost will have to play some patient, consistent golf to stand a chance, but so far he’s on the right track.
James Kingston and Chris Williams were yet to tee off in the afternoon field.
