‘I’m getting better at playing at The Open,’ said Charl Schwartzel after shooting 73 on Sunday at Royal Troon to share 18th place at the 145th Open Championship.
His Friday 66 became a distant memory over the weekend, where everyone but Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson struggled with coastal winds, links golf, and Scottish weather.
Stenson became Champion Golfer of the Year with a record Open Championship round of 63. He also matched Jason Day’s record of 20-under-par, which is the lowest total in major history.
Schwartzel, who won the Masters in 2011, was determined to get a Claret Jug of his own.
‘It’s one tournament a year, but it is one of these majors. It’s one that I would like to win. The Claret Jug is something special,’ said the South African. ‘We’ll come back next year and think about the experience that I’ve got from this and see if we can improve.’
