Jacques Blaauw has been joined by Frenchman Jeong-Weon Ko at the top of the Cape Town Open leaderboard after Friday’s second round at the Royal Cape Golf Club.
The South African backed up his excellent start from Thursday with another consistent performance, despite an early stumble in his round.
Playing the back nine first, Blaauw made six birdies across his 18 holes, while dropping three shots throughout – settling for a three-under-par 69.
The second-round showing saw him move up to nine under par for the week, where he holds a one-shot lead alongside Ko.
‘It was tricky with the wind in the beginning,’ Blaauw said at the end of his round.
‘I played it as a two-club wind, and then luckily it died down towards the end of the round. I had a target of reaching 10 under today and came up one short. But I’m very pleased and looking forward to the weekend here in Cape Town, where I grew up.’
Ko, however, was the big mover on Friday and carded the lowest round of the day – signing off with a seven-under-par 64.
‘It went pretty smoothly right from the beginning,’ he added.
‘I didn’t have to worry about anything. When all those putts kept rolling in, there’s no better feeling than that. I made some long putts in those five birdies. It’s the first time I’ve ever done that. I didn’t think too much about the score. I just kept on doing my thing and staying focused.’
