    Lee Westwood made a brilliant start to the Scottish Open as he battled to a first-round lead after a magnificent nine-under-par 62 on Thursday.

    The Englishman flew out of the blocks early in the day and delivered a masterclass showing of two eagles and five birdies for a bogey-free opening round at the Renaissance Golf Club.

    Westwood managed to finish with a one-stroke lead over Alexander Bjork and Joost Luiten, who both opened their accounts with rounds of 63.

    Local man Scott Jamieson made a decent start to his Scottish Open campaign by shooting a seven-under-par 64 for his Thursday display.

    Compleat Golfer playing editor Brandon Stone and Christiaan Bezuidenhout finished as the highest-placed South Africans on day one after respective 69s to end on two under par and in T24 for the event.

    George Coetzee, Erik van Rooyen, Dean Burmester and Shaun Norris all made steady starts to their week by completing an even-par round on Thursday, while Thomas Aiken and Garrick Higgo concluded on one over par.

    Justin Harding and Haydn Porteous are a further shot behind on two over par with Justin Walters struggling on four over.
