Nikhil Rama has won the very first edition of the Virtual Sunshine Tour Knockout by claiming a three-stroke victory over Heinrich Bruiners during Sunday’s final at Soweto Country Club.
Following four highly competitive battles on Saturday, Rama and Dwayne Basson clashed in the first semifinal of the day before Bruiners and Oliver Bekker went head to head.
VST Knockout playoffs confirmed
Fans were able to tune into the action by streaming the matchups live on the Sunshine Tour’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitch channels, while the tour made a valuable food hamper donation to FeedSA for every birdie that was made throughout the competition.
And, they were in for a highly entertaining battle first up as Rama and Basson went into a playoff after both players finished on one under par in regulation.
Rama, though, was on song with a birdie on the first playoff hole to edge Basson for the first spot in the final.
In the second semifinal of the day, Bekker experienced a rather tough nine holes in Soweto, going three over for his round, while Bruiners finished on two under par for a five-shot win.
It meant the drama all came down to Rama and Bruiners to see who would walk away as the first winner of #VST8knockout.
The two pros weren’t going to give an inch as things remained extremely tight throughout the round.
With both players locked at one under par through four holes, Rama decided to make a charge and birdied consecutive holes on the 5th and 6th.
He would hang on to the two-shot lead heading into the final hole before Bruiners made a bogey on the ninth, while Rama saved par to win the event by three strokes, while he also took home a cash prize of R3000.
