Patrick Reed makes his 10th major appearance this week as he tees up with the world’s best at Oakmont Country Club.
He has a best finish of tied-14th from his nine major starts, which as at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay. The world number 11 held the 36-hole lead with Jordan Spieth, but a third round six-over-par 76 scuppered his chances.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful 2016 with eight top-15 finishes that includes two second places at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and Valero Texas Open. He has banked a little under $3 million and sits sixth in the FedEx Cup standings.
He endured a disappointing Masters and tied for 49th at 12-over-par, but will be hoping to do better at the second major of the year.
The four-time PGA Tour winner is coming off a top-10 finish at the Memorial Tournament and will be hoping for another strong performance. He ranks second on Tour in scrambling, which is a plus heading to Oakmont, but is a lowly 111th in driving accuracy and 94th in greens in regulation. The course is known for its narrow targets off the tee and the punishment it hands golfers for not finding the green.
Reed is part of the young generation of American golfers that are good enough to win majors, but there are some kinks he needs to iron out before he can consistently contend on the biggest stages in golf.
