Australian Marc Leishman is the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open champion after a brilliant final round at the famous Torrey Pines South Course, which led him to a one-stroke victory, writes ANDRE HUISAMEN.
Starting the fourth round on eight under par, Leishman shot an emphatic 65 on Sunday to edge Spaniard Jon Rahm, who was the overnight leader heading into the final round.
But the 36-year-old Aussie was a man on a big mission on Sunday as he went seven under for the day to surge to the top of the leaderboard, where he closed on 15 under par for the competition.
Five birdies on the front nine holes gave him a brilliant start and sent him on his way for a low score.
He managed to carry that rhythm into the back nine and despite making a bogey on the 17th hole, Leishman hit back immediately, finishing off in style with a birdie on the 18th hole to take the clubhouse lead.
For Rahm, though, it was just one shot too far when he suffered a rather struggling and disappointing day out on the course, especially given how well poised he was to win the competition on Sunday.
In the end he had to settle for a round of 70, making two bogeys and a double on the front nine.
The 2019 Race to Dubai winner did well to get back in contention on the back nine with an eagle and three birdies, but it proved in vain as Leishman claimed his fifth PGA Tour victory.
Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy finished in T3 on 12 under alongside Brandt Snedeker, who also showed good intent over the four days.
Tiger Woods finished the competition on nine under par and in T9 after a final round 70, while Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed and Tony Finau concluded in T5 on 10 under par.
