Two-time SA Open winner David Frost carded two-over-par 72 for the first round of the Senior Players Championship on Thursday to remain within four strokes of the lead.
The 56-year-old struggled to make birdies at the Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club and wrapped up the round in a share of 19th, four shots behind leader Jay Don Blake.
Frost spent 86 weeks ranked in the top 10 golfers in the world between 1988 and 1994 and won 10 PGA Tour titles. He has become a regular fixture on the PGA Tour Champions and this year ranks ninth on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List.
On Thursday he had a quiet front stretch and birdied the ninth to turn in level par, but suffered three bogeys on the back to slide down the leaderboard. He made a birdie three at the 18th to salvage his round and signed for 72.
There are not many four-round tournaments on the senior circuit and Frost will be conscious of keeping pace with there leaders. He did so in the first round and has a chance to move into the heart of the competition, provided he scores well on Friday.
