Vaughn Groenewald is looking to build on consistent form this season at the KCM Zambia Open, which is the Sunshine Tour’s second excursion to the country this year.
The 41-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2015 season and climbed 521 places in the world rankings to hold 320th place by the end of the year. The four-time Sunshine Tour winner has shown consistent form in 2016, but has not yet cracked the top 300 in the world.
The George resident has accumulated six top-20 finishes this season and is coming off tie for eighth place at the Lombard Insurance Classic. His other notable performances include a tie for 11th at the Royal Swazi Open, a tie for 13th at the Eye of Africa PGA Championship and a top-20 at the co-sanctioned Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The world number 354 has missed two cuts out of eleven starts this season, which came at the Joburg Open and Tshwane Open. His results have seen him climb to 42nd on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, something he will be hoping to improve.
Groenewald will be confident going into this week after winning the 2015 Zambia Sugar Open by four shots. His current form suggests he should be somewhere near the top of the leaderboard come the final round.
The KCM Zambia Open enjoys a rich history that dates back to 1972 and it has been a constant on the tour since 2000. Winners include previous Ryder Cup players such as Sam Torrance, Christy O’Connor Jnr, and Ian Woosnam. Well respected golf commentator Ewen Murray has also won the tournament in the past. From a South African point of view, past winners include Jbe’ Kruger and Justin Harding.
