Jason Day will return from a break when he tees off at Muirfield Village Golf Club this week for the Memorial Tournament.
The Australian’s last outing ended in victory at the Players Championship, but this week he returns to a venue that has not been kind to him in the past. Day’s record at Muirfield Village only shows a best finish of a tie for 27th as opposed to his main threats for the title. Jordan Spieth finished in a tie for third last year while Rory McIlroy has had three top-15 finishes in Ohio in the past.
Day, the 2015 PGA Champion has however won seven events since last year’s appearance at The Memorial, so not improving on his best finish would be a shock to all watching.
The Queensland-born golfer propelled himself to the top of the FedEx Cup standings with his win at TPC Sawgrass and a career best performance at Muirfield Village Golf Club will help him consolidate his lead if he achieves what is expected.
His strength lies in his putting where he frequents the top ten in putting statistics on the PGA Tour this year. If he sinks his putts, his best finish at Muirfield Village may be a win, which would not be a surprise for a man that has shown that he is in hot form.
South Africans in the field include George Coetzee, Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel.
