Branden Grace fired a near-flawless 66 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club on Saturday to move within three shots of the lead ahead of the final round at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
The South African wunderkind struggled on Friday and looked to be slipping out of contention, but zoomed back into action on moving day with a round that included seven birdies and one drop.
American Rickie Fowler led the way on 13-under-par after shooting rounds of 70, 68, 65 and was two shots ahead of second-placed Joost Luiten.
‘It’s nice to feel comfortable on the greens and I’m looking forward to having some opportunities on Sunday afternoon,’ said Fowler. ‘I’m gonna have to earn this win, because there are a lot of guys near the top of the leaderboard and it won’t be easy.’
Grace was part of a four-way tie for third place and looked set to challenge for the title. His history in United Arab Emirates has been solid and includes victories at the Qatar Masters last year.
This week he’s up against the best in the world, which seems to be territory he favours. The scores are out there in Abu Dhabi, and a great Sunday could earn Grace his seventh European Tour title.
