A moving day 62 helped Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel move within four shots of the lead at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
After opening rounds of 66 and 72, the South African duo burst into life at TPC of Louisiana to finish in sight of what would be Oosthuizen’s first win on US soil.
Oosthuizen birdied the 1st to get their day off positively before adding a second gain at the 4h. The 2010 Open champion’s birdie at the 8th was sandwiched by two from Schwartzel as the Saffas made their move.
Schwartzel’s run of birdies continued as he got his side storming past the field with gains at the 10th and 11th holes before both teammates birdied the 13th.
Oosthuizen then bailed his side out with a par at the 15th after Schwartzel was in trouble with the duo again both birdieing the next hole. Oosthuizen completed the near perfect day by holing his putt from 11 feet for birdie on the last.
Retief Goosen and Tyrone van Aswegen have matched their more fancied countrymen through three rounds and join Scots Martin Laird and Russell Knox and Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Chris Paisley at -16.
Last year’s playoff losers Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown are one clear of Tony Finau and Daniel Summerhays as well as Andrew Putnam and Michael Kim.
