Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent produced a sizzling 10-under-par 62 on Tuesday at Woodhill Country Club to lead a group of eight Sunshine Tour qualifiers into the second edition of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.
This year’s Indian Ocean island tournament takes place at the Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita from May 12-15 after the successful inaugural event last year heralded the first tri-sanctioned event with the Sunshine Tour, The European Tour and the Asian Tour.
Vincent made eight birdies and an eagle on his way to a five-stroke edge over England’s Jack Harrison and South Africans Dylan Frittelli and Bryce Easton, who each carded five-under-par 67.
With five players on four-under, there was a play-off to decide who was going to be the unlucky player to miss out on the trip to Mauritius where George Coetzee will defend his title. Ockie Strydom was eliminated, leaving the final four berths to Ryan Tipping, Henry Featherstone of England, Rhys West and Tyrone Ferreira.
Vincent’s brilliant round was also too good for the likes of BMW South African Open Championship runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout and the man who finished second in the Joburg Open, Zander Lombard. They each carded three-under 69s, but that was not good enough.
Vincent started quietly enough, with three birdies in his opening nine, but then he put his foot down to come home in seven-under 29 with five more birdies and an eagle-three on the 492-metre 11th,
He’s had a good start to his first year on the Sunshine Tour, with a share of fourth in the Eye of Africa PGA Championship, of fifth in the Golden Pilsener Zimabwe Open and he tied for 15th in last week’s Zambia Sugar Open.
