Roos made four bogeys and two double bogeys as he stumbled to a four over par 76 around the Diamond Country Club. Roos is three shots worse off than Ahlers, who made three bogeys en route to an opening 73.

Keith Horne finished level on Thursday after cancelling out three birdies with three bogeys.

The six other South Africans were all under par on day one in Austria, with Jaco Van Zyl leading the way after firing a bogey-free 67. Afternoon finishers Jbe Kruger and Trevor Fisher Jnr were next best on -3, with Zander Lombard and Dylan Frittelli on -2. Haydn Porteous is -1 after his opening 18 holes.

Lombard’s round could’ve been headline-catching, with the Rocco Forte Open runner-up making a triple bogey on the seventh hole from nowhere. After finding the hazard, Lombard chipped on to the green missed his bogey putt from close range before taking two putts to finally end his agony. No doubt rattled, Lombard made bogey on the next hole before closing with a par and a share of 21st place.
