The pair join Brandon Stone, Richard Sterne and Branden Grace on the bus out of New York following the cut which fell at +4.
Frittelli, enjoying a steady first season on the PGA TOUR, was in line to reverse his opening 77 as his level-par outward nine was transformed into one of hottest rounds of early play following a birdie on his 10th hole, and then a hole-out from 133 yards on the next.
Brooks Koepka leads by seven from Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott
A poor drive on the par-5 fourth hole saw him drop a shot as he moved to +5, and a string of pars left him needing the afternoon starters to push out. That favour never came as he missed the mark as one of five Saffas.
Erik van Rooyen and Louis Oosthuizen are -2 through 36 holes, 10 back of Koepka
Like Frittelli, Japan Tour player Norris made a mistake coming home, albeit a far more dramatic one.
His card of 73-74 doesn’t make for good reading, but for a triple bogey on the fifth hole – his 14th – he would be pegging it up on Saturday.
To make matters worse, that number was after a birdie and then a drive that found the fairway. It was a greenside bunker mishap that saw his week cut short.
Richard Sterne made two birdies in his 73, but had far too much to do after his Thursday 75.
The South Africans will take little comfort in the knowledge that stars such as Patrick Reed, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia all joined Masters champion Tiger Woods on the wrong side of the cutline.
