Tiger Woods struggled out of the gates and couldn’t recover eventually signing for an opening 78 on Thursday.
The former world number one hit the first four fairways but missed the green with every approach as he learnt the hard way at Shinnecock Hills. Woods began with a triple bogey and later four-putted the 13th to turn his attention from trying to win to trying to make the cut,
‘It’s tough out there. But, I mean, shouldn’t make two doubles and a triple, four-putt,’ said Woods.
‘For most of the day I just didn’t putt well.’
