Early clubhouse leader Ian Poulter was quick to thank the crowds after posting his lowest-ever opening score in a Major on Thursday.
Poulter returned to the scene where he finished as runner-up to Padraig Harrington in the Open Championship back in 2008, and quickly took control of his game despite tough scoring conditions.
‘The crowds were incredible and gave me that extra bit of energy,’ said Poulter, who shot 67 thanks to a front nine 32.
‘The Open is extremely special from a fan perspective and to be clapped on to every green means a lot. Players love this event and spectators respect them and make you feel great.’
Poulter’s story of losing his card and then regaining it, following a miscalculation earlier in the year, is well documented, with the Ryder Cup happy to put that all behind him as he goes in search of more victories.
‘It’s easy to be down when you think you are a great player and you aren’t getting the results.
‘I’m proud of how I’ve been able to refocus and get the level of golf back that I think I can play. Just to play well in a major again is a great feeling.’
Poulter will tee off at 14:04 on Friday.
