Muirfield Golf Club members have voted to update their membership policy to allow women to join the club for the first time in their history.
Club captain Henry Fairweather confirmed the news today as 498 votes were cast in favour of admitting women while 123 votes (19.8%) voted against it.
The club needed two-thirds of its eligible voters to back admitting women to adopt the change.
The re-vote comes after golf’s ruling body, the R&A, removed Muirfield from the roster as a host for the Open Championship following a vote in 2016 where only 64% of voters supported women being admitted as members of the club.
Muirfield has hosted the Open 16 times with the last one back in 2013 which saw Phil Mickelson crowned the Champion Golfer of the Year.
The R&A immediately responded by confirming Muirfield’s place in the rotation.
