David Horsey put together his best round of the season so far to take a one-shot lead as round one of the Hero Indian Open was completed on Friday morning in New Delhi.
An hour and 34 minutes was lost to storms on day one, meaning 66 players had to return to the DLF Golf and Country Club to complete their opening circuit, with Horsey (pictured) leading the field by one, with three to play.
The Englishman parred the 16th and 17th before taking advantage of the par five last from 18 feet on the resumption to card a six under par 66 and sit a shot clear of Italy’s Nino Bertasio, who charged through the field.
The Italian was one under, having completed 14 holes when play resumed, but made birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth to catapult himself into second place ahead of countryman Matteo Manassero, who had completed his round on Thursday.
Frenchman Romian Langasque joined Horsey in birdieing the last to move to three under alongside Spaniard Carlos Pigem, a bogey-birdie finisher, and England’s Eddie Pepperell, another man to get round on Thursday.
Birdieing the last was becoming something of a theme and Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher got in on the act to move into a group of 11 players at two under.
George Coetzee had a first round 73, to sit seven off the pace, while Jbe Kruger was a shot further back. Shaun Norris will have it all to do to make the cut after an opening 76.
