Tyrone van Aswegen shot 70 on Saturday at TPC Southwind to share 18th place at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, eight shots off the pace but nicely positioned for a good result.
The 34-year-old went out in two-over-par during the third round, but added birdies at the 10th, 12th, and 14th to restore his position on the leaderboard.
He was part of a 14-eay tie for 18th that included Dustin Johnson and Retief Goosen, but needs a Sunday flourish to really earn well in Memphis this week.
Daniel Berger remained top of the pack after shooting 69 on Saturday to reach 10-under-par. He was followed into the clubhouse by Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, and DA Points, who all shared second place on seven-under.
‘I just have to be myself,’ Berger said. ‘I feel like when you’re kind of in this position you can kind of try to do things that normally you wouldn’t do, and (I’ve) just got to have fun out there and be myself and see what happens.’
Van Aswegen is 101st in the FedEx Cup standings and a good result this week will go a long way to improving his station.
Likewise Goosen, who is shaping up well ahead of the US Open. He carded a one-over-par 71 on to share 18th place going into Sunday.
